Brief History

Many people from the Old South settled this area during the 1850s and 1860s. They established prosperous cotton farms and plantations that quickly established Tyler as one of East Texas's largest commercial centers. Some of these farms and plantations were later converted into prosperous peach orchards and cattle ranches during the late 19th century.
Tyler's growth was fueled during the early 20th century by a rose industry that still plays an important role in Tyler's economy. Its role in Tyler's history is celebrated each year during the Texas Rose Festival.
Tyler remained a small agricultural community until oil was discovered near Tyler in the 1930s. This discovery fueled the development of several clothing, food, fertilizer and furniture industries during the rest of the 20th century that provide much of Tyler's modern economic stability.
Tyler is now a modern Texas city that offers homebuyers safe neighborhoods, fantastic schools and reasonable living costs. These benefits should continue to make Tyler a great place to live in the years to come.
